People's Democracy(Weekly Organ of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) |
Vol.
XXVII No. 07 February 16, 2003 |
As
an
announcement
was
made
earlier
that
the
Left
Front
candidates
would
file
their
nomination
papers
on
February
3
and
4,
people
began
to
throng
the
party
offices
of
the
Left
Front
constituents
statewide
on
February
3
morning
itself.
These
mobilisations
gave
a
glimpse
of
the
spontaneous
participation
of
workers
and
peasants,
students
and
youths,
male
and
female
in
the
Left
Front’s
vigorously
proceeding
election
campaign.
As
has
been
reported
in
these
columns,
while
the
CPI
and
RSP
are
to
contest
two
seats
each,
the
Forward
Bloc
will
contest
one
seat.
The
rest
of
the
seats
will
be
contested
by
the
CPI(M).
On
the
days
the
Front
candidates
filed
their
nomination
papers,
all
the
district
and
subdivisional
headquarters
were
virtually
clogged
with
human
congregations
in
support
of
the
Left
Front
nominees.
The
gatherings
left
only
a
few
avenues
open
for
the
candidates
to
smoothly
proceed
to
the
offices
of
the
district
or
subdivisional
magistrates
for
the
purpose.
One
of
the
highlights
on
February
3
was
filing
of
his
nomination
papers
for
Dhanpur
constituency
by
chief
minister
Manik
Sarkar;
he
filed
his
papers
at
Sonamura
in
West
Tripura
district.
On
the
day
a
massive
march
accompanied
the
convoys
of
CPI(M)
candidates,
Manik
Sarkar
and
Subal
Rudra,
with
the
entire
10
km
stretch
of
the
road
from
Melaghar
to
Sonamura
having
been
flanked
by
hundreds
of
supporters
and
onlookers.
After
the
marchers
accompanying
two
other
CPI(M)
candidates
in
the
subdivision,
Sukumar
Barman
and
Sahid
Chowdhury,
merged
with
the
first-mentioned
convoys
at
Sonamura,
the
four
candidates
alongwith
other
leaders
of
the
CPI(M)
including
its
divisional
secretary,
went
to
the
SDM’s
office,
and
one
by
one
submitted
their
nomination
papers
by
1
p
m.
At
the
time,
the
air
was
reverberating
with
thunderous
slogans
raised
by
the
people
waiting
outside
to
give
vent
to
their
jubilant
spirit
on
the
filing
of
nominations
by
these
Left
Front
leaders.
Returning
to
the
party
office
after
filing
his
nomination,
Manik
Sarkar
went
to
the
roof
of
the
new
party
office
under
construction,
to
address
the
huge
gathering.
Amid
roaring
cheers,
he
said
the
tremendously
spontaneous
ardour
of
the
people,
emphasising
their
oneness
with
the
Left
Front,
was
the
harbinger
of
a
fifth
Left
Front
government
in
Tripura.
Confidence
and
not
complacence
is
the
only
need
of
the
hour
to
foil
any
conspiracy
to
falsify
the
people’s
mandate,
he
cautioned.
Giving
a
jolt
to
the
Congress-INPT
combine,
state
capital
Agartala
hosted
massive
marches
on
these
two
days
to
mark
the
moment
of
filing
of
Left
Front
nominations
for
11
constituencies
of
the
Sadar
subdivision
in
West
Tripura
district.
The
days
witnessed
the
people’s
militant
mood
to
defend
their
vital
interests
and
democracy
against
any
diabolic
attack
from
the
unholy
alliance.
Innumerable
people
arrived
in
the
town
on
the
occasion,
hiring
motor
vehicles
at
their
own
cost.
These
separate
processions
with
Left
Front
leaders
in
the
vanguard
paraded
through
the
streets
buoyantly
with
flags
and
festoons,
and
vibrant
with
slogans.
Youth
comprised
a
considerable
portion
of
those
participating
in
these
seemingly
interminable
marches.
At
certain
places
in
the
state,
huge
stirring
rallies
of
scooters
and
motorbikes
preceded
the
filing
of
nomination
papers
by
Left
Front
candidates.
