TRIPURA

Left Front List Electrifies Atmosphere

RELEASED at Agartala on January 13 afternoon by its convenor Baidyanath Majumder, the Left Front’s list of candidates for Tripura assembly polls electrified the atmosphere all over the state. It will be noted that the front was able to release its list of candidates for all the 60 assembly seats, close on the heels of the Election Commission’s announcement of its assembly poll schedule for 4 states on January 11. So far, no other political formation has been able to release its list in Tripura. Nor has any party or combine been able to do so in Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya. announcement of the Left Front list, by which the front has taken an early lead in poll campaigning, brought to the fore the revolutionary ardour of its activists and supporters statewide. Immediately after Majumder announced the names of the 60 Left Front candidates at a crowded press conference at the state CPI(M) headquarters, the state witnessed spirited squads taking out spontaneous processions and organising street comer meetings, fervently calling for a massive mandate to the Left Front candidate in each assembly constituency.

In fact, the people’s fervour came out despite the fact that there was no scheduled programme of the party or the front on the day, as it was the eve of the Pous festival. At places, some Left Front candidates also paraded the streets. In Agartala, streets, lanes and bylanes witnessed marches of various sizes in support of the Left Front candidates. On January 14, motor workers organised a spirited march in the very nerve centre of the state capital. All these marches and meetings statewide articulated the people’s commitment and resolve to form a fifth Left Front government by foiling all conspiracies of the heinous Congress-INPT alliance.

Out of the 60 Left Front candidates, 55 are from the CPI(M), 2 each from the CPI and RSP and 1 from the Forward Bloc. Seven incumbent legislators, including minister Balaram Reang of the CPI, are out of the fray this time. The other 6 are from the CPI(M) and these include the party state secretary and veteran Central Committee member Baidyanath Majumder himself, as the party complied to his plea to be spared of contest this time. There are 16 fresh candidates in the Left Front line-up for the February 26 assembly polls, out of which 15 are from the CPI(M) and 1 from the CPI. All members of the Left Front cabinet, except Balaram Reang, are to contest from their present constituencies. Though the Left Front stands for adequate representation of women in the assembly, various practical reasons prevented it from fielding more than three women candidates, Majumder told the press conference.

Releasing the list, Majumder voiced his firm conviction that the people of Tripura will give a spectacular and massive mandate in favour of unity, integrity and prosperity. He said the people of the state would definitely come forward to defend their hard-earned rights and gains from the extremists’ attacks and give a fitting rebuff to their parasitic patrons in the Congress-INPT combine, so as to form a fifth Left Front government in the state. In reply to a query on his comment that this struggle would be strenuous, he criticised the Congress for its alliance with the INPT which usurped the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC in short) in May 2000 ADC polls with the help of its underground agents while, only 6 months before the ADC polls, the INPT had received less than 1 per cent of votes in the 1999 parliamentary election. It is to be noted that the INPT is the overground wing of the NLFT, an outlawed extremist organisation responsible for murdering hundreds of people and for various other crimes. Majumder, however, was of the opinion that, with the people solidly standing by the Left Front, falsifying the verdict at gunpoint will not be an easy job this time. He demanded that the centre provide proper security assistance so as to ensure free and fair polls in the state. (INN)
