Left Front Announces Candidates For Assembly Polls

 

CONVENOR of the Left Front in Tripura and CPI(M) state secretary Baidyanath Majumder released on January 13 a list of the front’s candidates for the ensuing assembly elections in the state. The list was released at a crowded press conference held in the CPI(M) state committee office at Agartala on the day. The front has put up 16 new faces for the February 26 elections to the 60-member assembly.

Announcing the list of candidates, Majumder told newsmen that of the 60 seats, the CPI(M) would field  55 candidates, the CPI and the RSP would put up two candidates each, and the Forward Bloc one.

Majumder, who fought the assembly election ten times and has been a legislator for the past 25 years, will not contest the coming polls. CPI leader and jail minister Balaram Reang too will not contest.

Chief minister and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Manik Sarkar will contest from his present seat, Dhanpur, while finance and power minister Badal Chowdhury will contest from his sitting Hrishyamukh seat.

Among other prominent CPI(M) leaders, Samir Chakraborty will contest for the Ramnagar seat, education minister Anil Sarkar for the Pratapgarh (SC) seat and Subrata Chakraborty for the Badharghat seat. (INN)
