Extremists Pose Threat To Bangladesh Security

FOR a long time, the government of Bangladesh has continued to deny the Indians allegation that it is harbouring in its territory extremists from the entire north-east, including Tripura. This is of course a vain bid to conceal the truth. Yet the heightened activities and atrocities of these imperialist-sponsored extremists on the eve of Tripura assembly elections are taking their toll in terms of the lives of peace-loving citizens of Bangladesh as well. The latest instance of the bloody consequence of providing sanctuary to Indian extremists in Bangladesh territory has also brought to light the complicity of certain Congress leaders and activists in the trans-border trafficking of the Tripura terrorists.

On December 3, hogging the headlines in several Bangladeshi dailies including the largely circulated Jugantar, the incident took place between the midnight on December 1 till the next morning. Within half a kilometre across the border, just opposite to Anandanagar-Kalamchora village under Sonamura subdivision in West Tripura, the house of Jahangir Alam, a former jawan of Bangladesh Rifles, at South Jhinia village of Commilla district in Bangladesh had been a den of the Nayanbasi faction of NLFT. The group of 20-25 extremists, harboured there, used to infiltrate into Tripura through Galachipa of Sonamura. According to sources, some time ago Salim Mia and Rabi Mia, brother and maternal uncle respectively of Congress legislator Billal Mia, extended help to the Biswamohan faction of NLFT to oust the Nayanbasi faction from the house. Since then, coming from their dens in Chittagong Hill Tracts and Sylhet district as also in Mainamati area of Comilla, NLFT extremists of the Biswamohan faction have often put up in this house. They also had regular links with certain Bangladesh Army officers of Mainamati Cantonment, it has been learnt.

According to leading newspapers of Bangladesh, at about 1.00 a m on December 1, the Nayanbasi faction carried out a surprise attack on the Biswamohan faction when it was putting up in Jahangir Alam’s house, in a bid to recover the lost ground. Then followed about 200 rounds of crossfire between these two rival gangs of the NLFT. In this exchange of fire, Neptune Nahar (27), wife of the extremists’ shelter-keeper Jahangir Alam, was killed on the spot and two daughters Lipi (3) and Mousomi (7) were grievously injured. Jahangir Alam, however, fled from the scene. The armed conflict between the two warring extremist factions of Tripura inside the territory of Bangladesh at dead of night shattered with panic the peaceful slumber of the devout Muslims after they had taken their early morning food before the Ramzan fasting on the day began.

The conflict left four extremists of the Biswamohan group killed and two others injured, with all others of the group escaping helter-skelter. Among the extremists of the group who escaped, two were caught with several sophisticated arms, by Bangladeshi citizens, when they were trying to cross over into Durgapur village of Sonamura next morning. Later on Bangladesh army officers arrived and removed them from the spot.

In a statement released on December 3, Bangladesh Workers Party president Rasheed Khan Menon and general secretary Bimal Biswas expressed deep concern over the death of a housewife and injury to her two daughters in Bangladesh because of a conflict between two groups of a separatist outfit from Tripura. Expressing concern over such misadventures of the militants of Tripura in the Bangladesh territory, the statement said such incidents prove beyond doubt the allegations that these extremists are conspiring to dislodge the Left Front government of Tripura and have been killing the Left Front’s leaders and activists. Besides, such extremists are also a threat to the internal security of Bangladesh. The statement strongly urged the Bangladesh government to stop such atrocities of the Tripura extremists who are misusing the Bangladesh territory. (INN)
