And Now Chunar Bandh After Varanasi

THE people of Chunar rose up to claim their due from the BSP-BJP government of Uttar Pradesh, when, following the successful bandh at Varanasi, they organised a Chunar bandh on July 12. Their struggle committee that organised the bandh, consisted of the CPI(M) and some other political parties as well as social groups like lawyers. The bandh was organised to protest the complete breakdown in electricity distribution. The bandh was total and a clash occurred when the bandh activists blocked the rail line. A lathicharge and firing are reported. 41 people were arrested.

The CPI(M)’s Central Committee member Suneet Chopra has condemned the police violence in Chunar, and called for adequate compensation for those wounded.
