Anganwadi Leaders Tell The PM

A DELEGATION consisting of A R Sindhu, secretary of the All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers and Basudev Acharya, MP and general council member of CITU met the prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee and demanded that the required government order (GO) for implementing the enhancement of honorarium for anganwadi workers and helpers, which was announced by the then finance minister, Yashwant Sinha, for this fiscal year, may be released immediately.

It may be noted that the budgetary provision for the proposed enhancement has been made, but the government has not issued the GO even 9 months after the announcement, causing a lot of resentment among the anganwadi employees. Already, there are reports from several states that they are expressing their anger through mass action including burning of effigies of the unresponsive central government.

The prime minister, although did not give any assurance of issuing the GO, told the delegation that whatever announcement is made by the government, that should be implemented. He assured that he will consider the matter and find out why the GO has not been issued.

The delegation submitted a memorandum to the prime minister, which was signed by various MPs, demanding the immediate implementation of the enhancement of honorarium. The delegation showed the prime minister clippings of the various advertisements from the ministry of HRD announcing the enhancement of honorarium as their achievement. They also submitted to him the letter written by Ms Sumitra Mahajan, the then minister for state of HRD, to various MPs stating the government approved the enhancement of honorarium.
