JYOTI BASU DECLINES AWARD

In a letter dated August 21, written to the secretary of the Sankaracharya Samingal Samasthanam, Kancheepuram, CPI (M) Polit Bureau member and former Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu has politely declined to receive the National Eminence Award which the organizers had chosen to give to him for his "significant contribution in the field of public leadership."

In his reply, Jyoti Basu thanked the organisers but said that he was unable "to accept the honour" since he has "decided not to accept any award for the work to which I have dedicated my life." The state secretary of the CPI (M) Anil Biswas released the letter to the press on August 22.
