DUJ Condemns Scribe’s Detention

THE Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has condemned the unwarranted and blatantly illegal action of the Delhi Police in detaining a renowned journalist and well known writer, Iftikhar Gilani, and harassing his family on February 9, 2013.

Through a statement issued on February 10, 2013, the DUJ has taken stern note of the fact that this was not the first time Gilani had been subjected to this sort of agony and trauma.

On receiving the information about Gilani’s illegal detention, DUJ general secretary S K Pande tried to get in touch with the Delhi Police commissioner and other concerned authorities, but in vain. The commissioner’s office informed that the commissioner was unavailable, while other officers played hide and seek.

The Delhi Union of Journalists has said it would organise protest meetings and actions in consultation with other organisations of journalists and press in Delhi.

In the meanwhile, the DUJ demanded immediate action against the police officials who are responsible for this manifestly illegal act of detaining Gilani.
