Haryana: CPI(M) Flays Khap Leaders’ Remarks

THE Haryana state unit of the CPI(M) has strongly criticised certain utterances by leaders of so-called khap panchayats describing most of the rape complaints as fake and consensual, as reported in a section of the press. These leaders were also reported saying that most of the rape complaints were lodged with an intention of extorting money from the accused persons.

Through a statement issued from Rohtak on December 31, 2012, the CPI(M) has expressed grave concern over such outrageous remarks, particularly at a time when the entire country was displaying its anger against heinous incidents of rape and sexual assault on women.

The party has also taken serious view of the gang rape cases being perpetrated unabated in Haryana while the chief minister of the state, himself in charge of the home portfolio, was maintaining an astonishing silence on these incidents.

The CPI(M) statement, issued by its state secretary Inderjit Singh, made an appeal to all justice loving people to condemn the audacious and atrocious views  of khap spokesman, expressed after a meeting of the caste panchayat reportedly held at Hansi in Hisar district on December 28, 2012.
