Observe 20th Anniversary of

Babri  Masjid Demolition: CPI(M)

DECEMBER 6 marks the 20th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid by the Hindutva forces.  The demolition of the Masjid was the most serious assault on the secular principle of the State and it led to communal polarisation and widespread communal violence.

The Hindutva forces, represented by the RSS and its various outfits, are still actively trying to foment Hindu-Muslim tensions and propagate the communal agenda.  Recently, there have been incidents of communal violence in Uttar Pradesh, the latest being in Faizabad and a number of incidents in Karnataka.  Some extremist Muslim organisations are also in the field to propagate their sectarian agenda.  The Central Committee in its October meeting had called for continuing the campaign against the communal forces. 

The Polit Bureau has decided that in such a situation, the Party should observe the 20th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition as a day in defence of secularism and against the divisive agenda of the communal forces. On this day, we should highlight the danger posed by the communal forces to the secular basis of the Indian republic; how communalism is used as a weapon to divide the people and divert their attention from the real problems that they face; and how communalism and divisive forces will weaken the country’s unity.  We should demand that old religious places of worship should not be disturbed in the name of disputes and the rights of the minorities should be protected.

Party units should hold meetings, processions and seminars to observe the day. Other Left and secular forces can be involved in the observance.
