EMINENT Malayalam poet and Jnanpith Award winner O N V Kurup handed over on January 6 the manuscript of a theme song written for the CPI(M)’s 20th party congress to the organising committee formed for the purpose. In a function held in the organising committee office in Kozhikode, general secretary of this committee and secretary of the CPI(M) district committee, T P Ramakrishnan, received the manuscript from the 81 years old, veteran poet, who is the patron of the organising committee. The function was attended by eminent writers and literary critics of Kerala, and marked the cultural front’s solidarity with the party congress.

Addressing the gathering, O N V Kurup said that the cooperation of writers and artists is needed for creating the ideal state which the Left dreams of. The Indian communist movement has in fact grown with this legacy.

Renowned poet and former Sahitya Akademi secretary Satchidanandan said that Kerala was going to host the CPI(M) congress in a period when the Left ideology and values are about to stage a comeback. Well-known novelist M Mukundan opined that only the Left parties could ensure any real progress. Marxist thinker and critic B Rajivan said that the current developments are sure to shatter the argument that capitalism would survive the ongoing crisis.

CPI(M) Central Committee member M A Baby read out the theme song while Kozhikode mayor Professor A K Premajam presided over the function. Novelist P Valsala, critic K E N Kunjahammed, playwright Pirappankode Murali, Deshabhimani Weekly editor Dr K P Mohanan, CPI(M) state committee member M Kelappan, former MP P Satheedevi, Purushan Kadalundi (MLA) and former mayor M Bhaskran also attended the function. K T Kunhikkannan proposed the vote of thanks.
