CITU Condemns Govt for Bareilly Tragedy

IN a statement issued on February 2, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has expressed over the loss of lives of 15 youngsters and serious injuries to many, in the tragic incidents that took place in Bareilly a day before.

The fact that more than 1.5 lakhs of young people from 11 states had gathered for selection for mere 416 posts in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) shows the extent and depth of unemployment in this country. At the same time, the mismanagement by authorities at the place of recruitment shows the contempt with which the jobseekers are treated in this country. This is not the first time such incidents are happening, the CITU has reminded.

The CITU is of the opinion that the authorities have not understood the seriousness of the problem and the desperation of the unemployed in the country. They are only covering up the realities with the statistics of GDP growth and poorly sampled unemployment data etc.

The CITU has condemned the authorities for the utter lack of preparedness for the recruitment programme and also the blame game various departments have been indulging to cover up their failure.

These tragic incidents once again reveal the real depth of the growing unemployment situation in the country despite the government’s noisy claims of growth. According to the CITU, today the neo-liberal policy regime is promoting unemployment along with economic growth. That is why the trade unions in the country have already taken up the issue of growing unemployment and are agitating for reversal of the policy regime that is spurring jobless growth.
