People’s Upsurge in Egypt

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on February 1, 2011.

EGYPT is witnessing a popular upsurge against the despotic regime of President Hosni Mubarak. For the past one week, tens of thousands of people have been demonstrating in the streets demanding an end to Mubarak’s rule.

The thirty year period of the Mubarak regime has been marked by authoritarianism, suppression of democratic rights, corruption, and acting as an agent of the United States in the region.

The CPI(M) extends its full support to the people of Egypt who are struggling to overthrow the despotic rule.

The United States, which is notorious for engineering “regime change” in countries that do not act at its behest, should be warned not to interfere with the will of the people of Egypt.

The Egyptian people will not accept anything less than the immediate removal of Mubarak from power. It is only with this step that there can be a transition to a democratic set up based on the wishes of the people.
