AARM Protest POSCO Decision

THROUGH a statement issued from New Delhi on February 1 by its chairman, Baju Ban Riyan, the Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM) has protested against the clearance given to the POSCO project in Orissa by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The decision goes against the majority recommendations of the committee appointed by the ministry itself, the AARM has pointed out. In fact, the crucial requirement of getting the concerned people’s consent through gram sabhas has been ignored by the central government.

According to the organisation, in the light of the committee’s report the central government still has an opportunity to insist on shifting of the project to an alternative site as suggested by the affected village and endorsed by the committee. This would have addressed the environmental and social cause.

The AARM has demanded that the ministry must reverse its decision. The organisation has extended all support to the struggle against the POSCO project.
