Workers’ Party of Korea Successfully Holds Its Conference

Below we publish the excerpts of the statement released by the Workers’ Party of Korea after its conference that concluded on September 28.

ON September 28 last, the Workers’ Party of Korea successfully held its conference of delegates in Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK.

The conference was convened to elect its new supreme leadership body in order to further strengthen the WPK, the general staff of the Korean revolution, in keeping with the requirements of a new environment in which a decisive shift is taking place in the building of a great, powerful and prosperous nation.

A new supreme leadership body of the WPK was elected at the conference.

Kim Jong II was re-elected as a geneal secretary of the WPK in accordance with unanimous will and desire of the entire WPK membership, the Korean People’s Army servicepersons and the Korean People.

The conference also re-elected Kim Jong II as member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central committee, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, member of the Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK, according to the WPK rules and its bylaws on the election of the supreme leadership body of the WPK.

The conference elected Kim Jong Un as member of the Central Committee and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK. Prior to the conference, the supreme commander of the KPA issued an order awarding the military rank of general to Kim Jong Un.

At the conference, the WPK rules were revised and the central leadership body elected to meet the new requirements of the development of the party and the revolution.

The conference elected 125 members and 105 alternate members of the Central Committee, and an ensuing plenary meeting of the WPK Central Committee newly elected 5 members of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, 17 members and 15 alternate members of the Political Bureau of the Central committee and 10 secretaries of the Central committee and organised the Central military commission of the WPK.

The conference also marked an important occasion of epoch-making significance in bringing about an early accomplishment of the cause of building a thriving socialist nation by strengthening the party organisationally and ideologically and enhancing the militant function and role of the party.

The Workers’ Party of Korea is now engaged in an energetic struggle to effect great innovation and a big leap forward in building a great, powerful and prosperous nation, relying on the revolutionary zeal of all the party members, the KPA servicepersons and the Korean people that has soared after the party conference.

Efforts are directed to bring about a decisive turning point in the people’s livelihood by once again giving spurs to the light industry and agriculture this year, which marks the 65th founding anniversary of the WPK.

The WPK is determined to ensure DPRK turns into a prosperous nation without fail by 2012, the year of the 100th birth anniversary of the respected leader Comrade Kim II Sung, the founding father of socialist Korea.

Steel, fertilisers and fibers based on Juche-oriented production systems are being turned out in plenty, large-scale power stations and computerised and numerically controlled plants are mushrooming everywhere, and modern fruit, fish and foodstuff production bases and factories of people’s consumer goods are running at full capacity.

With the ongoing powerful construction of a more Juche-oriented, modern and scientific national economy, the country’s economy has been put firmly on the track of positive growth and fairy-tale wonder are being worker everywhere in the country with a promise of bright future for a thriving nation. This is the proud reality of our country today.

Today when we are pushing forward with the building of a great, powerful and prosperous nation with the general mobilisation of the entire party, army and people, what we need more than anything else is a stable environment around our country.

The United States and other hostile forces, however, are intentionally heightening the tension on the Korean Peninsula and are dead set against our people building a strong thriving nation.

The US and the authorities in South Korean orchestrated the sinking of the Cheonan warship in March for which they unreasonably blamed the DPRK, took the case to the UN, and, unable to achieve their purpose there, imposed additional sanctions and are stepping up pressure on the DPRK with reckless moves to aggravate a nuclear war.

From July to early October alone, the United States and South Korea conducted a series of joint military exercises rarely seen before such as a large-scale naval exercise, Ulji Freedom Guardian and an anti-Submarine drill with the involvement of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, in the waters off the Korean Peninsula.

Because of this, an extremely tense situation is prevailing on the Korean Peninsula and the inter-Korean relations are still entrapped in a phase of enmity and confrontation rather than that of reconciliation of cooperation.

Now our military and people are closely monitoring the moves of the hostile forces including the United States.

No matter how the hostile forces cling to their policy of sanctions and pressure against our country, the final victory lies in store for us as long as we enjoy the leadership of the great leader Kim Jong II and the self-reliant defense capability made invincible thanks to Songun (Military-first) policy.
