Prakash Karat’s Condolence Message

The following condolence message was sent by CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat to the First Secretary, central committee, Communist Party of Cuba on June 20, 2007

DEAR Comrade,

It is with a sense of deep grief that we have learnt of the passing away of Comrade Vilma Espin, the legendary woman leader of the Cuban revolution. She belonged to the original batch of guerilla fighters who had launched the decisive struggle for the overthrow of the dictatorship in Cuba. Comrade Vilma will be remembered by millions of people cutting across national boundaries for her dedicated service to the cause of socialism, equality and freedom. She was an inspiration for people all over the world struggling against imperialist aggression and bondage. Her role as founder president of the Cuban Women’s Federation made a lasting impact on the elevation of women’s status in Cuba helping it to become an example of a most gender just State.

On behalf of the central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) I pay deep homage to her memory. Please convey our heartfelt condolences to the central committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and her life companion and comrade, Comrade Raul Castro and to members of her family. (INN)
