CPI(M) Greets Cuban Revolution Anniversary

On January 2, 2007, the CPI(M) sent the following message of greetings to the General Secretary, Communist Party of Cuba, on the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

THE Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), now in session at Kolkata, sends its warm fraternal greetings to the Communist Party of Cuba and through it to the people of Cuba on the 48th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

The defeat of the notorious Batista regime and the victory of the Cuban Revolution signalled the dawn of a new era in the Caribbean, in fact in Latin America. However, in the years since then, many overt and covert US imperialist inspired attacks to overthrow the government headed by Comrade Fidel Castro and even assassinate him were successfully thwarted, including the most notorious Bay of Pigs invasion. The CPI(M) takes pride in the fact that people of this island country, lying just 90 miles off the US coast, have time and again forcefully expressed their determination to build socialism and defeat all US designs to undermine the revolution.

International opinion has turned around in favour of Cuba with repeated UN resolutions calling for the lifting of the US imposed embargo and blockade of Cuba. Cuba has become an inspiration for the struggling peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to take on the might of US imperialism and the neo-liberal agenda that the ruling classes have been pursuing in their respective countries. The spark lit by Cuba has spread. Venezuela, Bolivia, Mexico, Brazil, Nicaragua and now Ecuador --- the list of peoples and countries inspired by the success of the Cuban Revolution gets bigger and bigger.

The CPI(M) continues to draw inspiration from the success of the Cuban Revolution. We wish the Cuban people and the Communist Party of Cuba all success in their endeavour to consolidate the socialist gains and march forward.

While these rejoicings take place, the Central Committee expresses concern about Comrade Fidel Castro’s health. It joins the millions of others in wishing him a speedy recovery.

We once again send our best wishes on this occasion.
