JCP Delegation Holds

Talks With CPI(M) Leadership

THE delegation of the Japanese Communist Party met the CPI(M) leadership for talks on  December 16. The six member delegation headed by Kazuo Shii, chairman of the executive committee visited the CPI(M) central committee office at AKG Bhavan and held talks with the CPI(M) leadership represented by general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat and central committee member, Jogendra Sharma.

In a detailed exchange of views lasting for over three hours the two sides gave their assessment of the international situation. Both the parties were in full agreement about the serious danger posed to international peace by the US moves to launch a war against Iraq. Both sides were of the firm opinion that abiding by the United Nations charter, the United States must be prevented from unilaterally launching military aggression. Iraq has committed to implement the security council resolution 1441 which paves the way for a peaceful resolution of the dispute. Both sides recognised the widespread opposition to the war moves including many countries who are allied to the United States. They resolved to intensify their activities to oppose war and mobilise public opinion.

The JCP delegation briefed the CPI(M) leadership about the situation in Japan and the activities of the JCP. The CPI(M) leadership informed the delegation about the situation within India and the political and organisational activities of the CPI(M). Both the JCP and the CPI(M) are important communist forces in the developed world and the developing world respectively. Both sides stressed the necessity to further strengthen bilateral relations which would be helpful in the struggle against imperialist hegemony and for a fair and just international economic order.

Following the talks a dinner was hosted for the visiting delegation by the CPI(M) Polit Bureau.

The JCP delegaton had a meeting with the CPI leadership on December 17. They also met MPs belonging to the Left parties at a tea hosted by Somnath Chatterjee, CPI(M) leader in the Lok Sabha.
