CPI(M) Greets Communist Refoundation Congress

The Central Committee of the CPI(M) sent the following message of greetings to the 5th congress of the Communist Refoundation Party of Italy, that opened at Rimini on April 4. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury attended the congress on behalf of the party.

THE Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) conveys warm fraternal greetings to the 5th congress of the Communist Refoundation Party of Italy.

Your congress is taking place in a very complex international situation when imperialism, led by the USA, is launching fresh offensives in the post-September 11, 2001 world situation. Simultaneously, the global economic recession is imposing greater burdens on the working people all across the world and more especially on developing countries. Imperialism is seeking to emerge from this crisis by intensifying the economic exploitation of the developing countries and shifting the burdens of the crisis on to them.

While the global protests against the current phase of globalisation continue to grow, there is a need for all communists, Left, progressive and anti-imperialist forces to strengthen the ranks of solidarity in this struggle. The CPI(M) is committed to contribute its mite in forging such a global resistance to the new imperialist offensive.

We in India, while bracing ourselves to meet this offensive, are also in the midst of a fierce political battle to safeguard the unity of our multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic billion-strong country. The right-wing political offensive is facing an erosion in its popular support base but at the same time it is launching greater onslaughts on the integrity of the country and the livelihood of the people. The recently concluded 17th congress of the CPI(M) has given a call for the unity of all Left, secular and democratic forces to forge a political alternative to the current right-wing government.

Comrades,

The CPI(M) follows keenly the developments taking place in Italy and the work of the Refoundation Party. We are confident that the deliberations of this congress will further strengthen the links of the Refoundation with the working people of Italy and shape mightier struggles in future.
